GreenGasUSA-Sonoco RNG project receives 2023 American Forest & Paper Association “Leadership in Sustainability Award: Greenhouse Gas Reduction.”

Austin, Texas, November 10, 2023 – GreenGasUSA is pleased to announce that its renewable natural gas (“RNG”) project at Sonoco’s (NYSE: SON) Hartsville, South Carolina, wastewater treatment facility has received the 2023 “Leadership in Sustainability Award: Greenhouse Gas Reduction” from the American Forest & Paper Association. The award was selected by a diverse judging panel of sustainability experts from the U.S. Department of Energy, GreenBlue, the Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology, Clemson University, Pure Strategies and the National Association of Manufacturers.

The collaboration between GreenGasUSA, and Sonoco represents the first pulp and paper industrial wastewater to RNG project in the southeastern region of the United States. Through this project, biogas yielded from the wastewater system of paper packaging product manufacturing is upgraded to pipeline quality RNG – capturing methane and removing the need to flare biogas into the atmosphere.

“We are delighted that GreenGasUSA’s partnership with Sonoco is being recognized for its contribution to emission reductions and circularity in the forest and paper products industry,” said CEO and Founder of GreenGasUSA Marc Fetten. “GreenGasUSA is proud to partner with a company like Sonoco that continues to set the standard for environmental stewardship practices. We see significant potential for others to benefit from waste-to-RNG projects and look forward to our role in building more sustainable and resilient value chains in the industry.”

The American Forest & Paper Association’s Sustainability Awards are designed to recognize exemplary sustainability programs and initiatives in the paper and wood products manufacturing industry. The selection of the Sonoco RNG project aligns with the American Forest & Paper Association’s Better Practices, Better Planet 2030 sustainability goals and statement of principles on diversity, equity and inclusion.
